From Combat Medic to Coffee CEO

Hi there! I’m Carrie Beavers, the proud founder and CEO of Soldier Girl Coffee Company LLC, and I’d like to share a little of my journey with you. My story started when I was 18, fresh out of high school and joining the Army in 1991.

I served as a combat medic until 2001, a decade filled with experiences that shaped me into the person I am today. After leaving the service, I turned to nursing—another path where I could care for others. I poured my heart into my work and raising my two wonderful children for years.
But in 2019, something shifted. I had filed a VA claim for PTSD related to military sexual trauma, a process that dredged up emotions I had pushed down for a long time. Those months weren’t easy; I found myself facing struggles I didn’t anticipate and dealing with the weight of thoughts and behaviors that were pulling me down.

But reaching out to a veterans’ support group online was a turning point. Their stories reminded me that I wasn’t alone in this fight. I found strength in that community, and with their encouragement, I set my sights on a new purpose: helping other veterans overcome the same isolation and mental health battles I was facing.
That’s how Soldier Girl Coffee was born in January 2021. It’s not just a coffee brand to me; it’s a mission. The reality of veteran suicide rates motivated me to make a difference, and I knew I wanted to create a place where veterans could feel seen and valued, even if it was one cup of coffee at a time.

I joined a veteran business mentorship group and leaned on my military training to overcome the challenges of starting an e-commerce business. My military background has shown me the power of resilience, humor, and setting goals beyond personal success, and I wanted to bring that into the brand.
I’ll be honest—running Soldier Girl Coffee hasn’t been easy. There’s always a new challenge to overcome, whether it’s rising coffee prices or shipping logistics. But I’ve made self-care a priority. Meditation, exercise, and leaning into my community have kept me grounded and ready to keep pushing forward.
What I love most about Soldier Girl Coffee is that it’s not just about selling coffee; it’s about building a community. I make a point to hire veterans, support veteran-owned businesses, and give back to veteran programs whenever possible. I connect with people directly through social media, sharing my own story and hearing theirs. We’ve even built sustainability into our business with Rainforest Alliance certification and eco-friendly practices like hydropower and biomass furnaces. I believe caring for our planet is part of caring for each other.
For anyone looking to start their own business—especially my fellow veterans—my best advice is to know your “why,” have a solid plan, and don’t be afraid to ask for support. Being part of a veterans’ community has been a massive part of my journey, and that sense of purpose keeps me going every day. Soldier Girl Coffee is more than coffee—it’s a reminder that we can all overcome, be bold, and make a difference, even in the most minor ways.

So, yes, my coffee has an attitude—and so do I! Soldier Girl Coffee is about waking up, speaking your mind, and going after what you want. Every cup is here to fuel that inner fire. It’s strong, bold, and unapologetically sassy, just like the men and women who inspire me every day. And I believe that each of us deserves to start our day with the strength to take on anything and the confidence to know we’ve got this.
So, to everyone who’s been part of this journey. I’m here to ensure every sip of Soldier Girl Coffee carries a little bit of strength, a lot of grit, and a reminder that you’re not alone. We’re in this together, one bold brew at a time.
